Guide
How the NED Merit Score is calculated
NED calls its aggregate the Merit Score, and it has only two parts. 60% comes from the NED pre-admission entry test and 40% from HSC Part-I. Matric is not in the formula at all, which is unusual among Pakistan's big engineering universities. A strong SSC result does nothing for your position on the merit list.
Note that it is HSC Part-I specifically, not your full Intermediate result. Candidates who have already completed HSC or A-levels are handled separately under NED's own policy, so if your full result is already in, check with the admission office which marks they will use for you before relying on the number here.
This 40 and 60 split is recent. It replaced an earlier arrangement that weighted the school record more heavily. The entry test now carries 60%, so it is the biggest single factor in your Merit Score. NED also requires at least 50% in the test to qualify at all.
The Formula
Component % = (Obtained ÷ Total) × 100MS = (Entry Test % × 60 + HSC Part-I % × 40) ÷ 100Weights: NED Entry Test 60 · HSC Part-I 40There is no Matric component. Both figures are entered as obtained and total marks; the calculator does the division.
Worked Examples
Example 1: a typical NED applicant
Entry test 70 out of 100, HSC Part-I 440 out of 550.
| Test percentage | (70 ÷ 100) × 100 = 70.00% |
|---|---|
| Test contribution (60%) | 70.00 × 0.60 = 42.00 |
| HSC Part-I percentage | (440 ÷ 550) × 100 = 80.00% |
| HSC contribution (40%) | 80.00 × 0.40 = 32.00 |
Example 2: test marks versus school marks
Ten more marks on the entry test, against ten more marks in HSC Part-I, from the same starting point.
| +10 test marks | 80.00 × 0.60 = 48.00 (+6.00) |
|---|---|
| +10 HSC marks | 81.82 × 0.40 = 32.73 (+0.73) |
| Ratio | 6.00 ÷ 0.73 ≈ 8× |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Matric count towards NED merit?
No. NED's published Merit Score formula is 40% HSC Part-I plus 60% entry test, with no SSC component. This surprises applicants coming from universities like COMSATS or CUST where Matric carries 10%.
Is it HSC Part-I or my whole Intermediate result?
The formula names HSC Part-I (or O-level marks / equivalent examinations). The NED FAQ adds that candidates who have already completed HSC or A-level 'will be dealt as per policy'. If your full result is out, check with the admission office which marks apply to you.
What is the minimum entry test score?
NED requires at least 50% in the pre-admission entry test to qualify. That is a threshold, not part of the sum. This calculator will still work out a Merit Score below it, but that score would not put you on the list.
I have O-levels. What do I enter?
Your O-level marks or IBCC equivalence in the HSC row. NED's formula explicitly covers 'HSC Part I / O-level Marks / Equivalent Examinations' in that same 40% slot.
Does the formula change between departments?
The 40/60 Merit Score is NED's university-wide undergraduate formula. What differs by department is the closing merit, which can vary by many points between Computer Science and the less-subscribed engineering disciplines.
Where does NED publish the official formula?
In its undergraduate admissions FAQ and prospectus on neduet.edu.pk, republished each admission cycle. Always check the current cycle's documents before you make a decision. NED has revised this formula recently.
