How NED University GPA and CGPA are calculated
NED University grades absolutely. Its published guidelines set out a fixed table equating each letter grade with a grade point and a percentage band, so your grade depends only on your own marks. The bands tile the full 0–100 range with no gaps, which means you can work out exactly which letter a mark earns before results are announced.
The NED plus grades are the detail almost every third-party calculator gets wrong. A B+ at NED is worth 3.4, a C+ is 2.4 and a D+ is 1.4. Nearly everywhere else in Pakistan uses .33 or .3. The minus grades follow the usual .7 pattern, so the scale mixes two step sizes. Apply a generic HEC table to a NED transcript and the result comes out wrong.
NED also awards an A+ for 94 and above. It carries the same 4.0 as an A, so it is recognition on the transcript rather than extra grade points. It cannot push a CGPA past 4.00.
The Formula
GPA / CGPA = Σ (Credit Hours × Grade Point) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours)This is NED's own published formula. An F scores 0.00 grade points while its credit hours remain in the denominator. Results are rounded to two decimal places.
Worked Examples
Example 1: one semester's GPA
A 15-credit-hour semester using NED grade points.
| Course 1, 3 CH, A (4.00) | 3 × 4.00 = 12.00 |
|---|---|
| Course 2, 3 CH, B+ (3.40) | 3 × 3.40 = 10.20 |
| Course 3, 3 CH, B (3.00) | 3 × 3.00 = 9.00 |
| Course 4, 3 CH, C+ (2.40) | 3 × 2.40 = 7.20 |
| Course 5, 3 CH, C (2.00) | 3 × 2.00 = 6.00 |
| Total grade points | 12.00 + 10.20 + 9.00 + 7.20 + 6.00 = 44.40 |
| Total credit hours | 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15 |
Example 2: why the .4 plus grades matter
A student who earns B+ in every course of a 136-credit-hour degree, scored on NED's table versus a generic HEC table.
| NED B+ is 3.40 | 136 × 3.40 = 462.40 |
|---|---|
| Generic HEC B+ is 3.33 | 136 × 3.33 = 452.88 |
| NED CGPA | 462.40 ÷ 136 = 3.40 |
| Generic CGPA | 452.88 ÷ 136 = 3.33 |
NED University of Engineering & Technology Grading Scale
NED University's official grade table, equating each letter with its grade point and percentage band. Note the plus grades: B+ 3.4, C+ 2.4 and D+ 1.4 are specific to NED and are where generic calculators go wrong.
| Grade | Marks % | Grade Points |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 94 and above | 4.00 |
| A | 85 – 93 | 4.00 |
| A- | 80 – 84 | 3.70 |
| B+ | 75 – 79 | 3.40 |
| B | 70 – 74 | 3.00 |
| B- | 67 – 69 | 2.70 |
| C+ | 64 – 66 | 2.40 |
| C | 60 – 63 | 2.00 |
| C- | 57 – 59 | 1.70 |
| D+ | 54 – 56 | 1.40 |
| D | 50 – 53 | 1.00 |
| F | Below 50 | 0.00 |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a NED B+ really worth 3.4 and not 3.33?
Yes. NED's published grade table lists B+ as 3.4, C+ as 2.4 and D+ as 1.4. The minus grades use the more familiar .7 values (A- 3.7, B- 2.7, C- 1.7), so NED's scale genuinely mixes step sizes. Any calculator that assumes the standard HEC .33/.67 pattern throughout will not match your NED transcript.
What is the difference between A+ and A at NED?
Marks, not points. An A+ covers 94–100 and an A covers 85–93, but both carry 4.0 grade points. The A+ is transcript recognition of an exceptional result; it contributes identically to your GPA and cannot lift a CGPA above 4.00.
What marks do I need to pass a NED course?
50%, which earns a D worth 1.00 grade points and covers the 50–53 band. Below 50 is F with zero grade points. The NED bands are narrow in the middle of the scale. B- is only 67–69 and C+ only 64–66. So a couple of marks moves a grade more easily than at universities using five-mark bands.
How do P, IP, X, I, W and WU grades affect my CGPA?
They carry no grade points. P marks a pass in a non-credit course, IP is in progress, X is exempted, I is incomplete, and W and WU are withdrawals. None of them carry grade points, so leave those courses out of the calculator. The dropdown offers only real letter grades for this reason.
What CGPA do I need for my NED degree?
A student must pass all the courses prescribed for their discipline with a CGPA of at least 2.00 to be eligible for the award of the degree. Individual programmes can set higher requirements, so check your department's rules if you are near the boundary.
Are final year project and lab marks handled differently?
They are examined differently but graded the same way. NED examines theory, practical, design and final year project work numerically, then declares the result as a letter grade with its grade point. Give each one its own row with its own credit hours and the arithmetic here is identical.
